Inukjuak High School

Inukjuak’s secondary school was built on a rocky cape northeast of the village. To deal with the site’s irregular topography and minimize the need to excavate bedrock, the building was constructed on three levels. Its architecture evokes elements of Inuit culture, resembling a skin stretched over a frame made of driftwood or whalebone, or the frame of a canoe, or the whale skin covering baleen.

In addition to this cultural reference, the building design features compact forms in response to Nunavik’s harsh weather conditions. The administrative area, classrooms, and sports facilities are housed in distinct sections, both in terms of their volume and facing. In the center of the project, the atrium connects the three components together.
