Airport Terminal – Chibougamau-Chapais
Located at the edge of the boreal forest, the new Chibougamau-Chapais airport terminal is the strategic gateway to the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James region, serving the communities of Chibougamau, Chapais, and Oujé-Bougoumou. Inaugurated in 2022, it meets growing air transport needs, current airport standards, and safety requirements for freight, medical evacuations, and forest firefighting operations.
The building is characterized by two low-rise volumes framing a central glazed public space that serves as a gathering point for passengers; a hybrid wood-steel structure with pre-stressed CLT panels and glued laminated timber columns; and wood curtain walls providing natural light and thermal performance. An integrated artwork, in Cree and French on the façade, pays tribute to the region.
